Sandy Adams Attends Leadership Oakland – 25th Anniversary Class

Sandy Adams, CFP® recently began participating in the 25th class of Leadership Oakland following in the footsteps of fellow partners Laurie Renchik, CFP®, and Timothy Wyman, The program is intended to help participants (about 50 each year) learn about Oakland County, our region and our state in order to be informed contributors and leaders within our communities.

Sandy recently attended a 2 ½ day retreat with 47 other professionals – all now her newest friends. The retreat, held in Roscommon at the R.A. MacMullan Conference Center, was the perfect place to set the stage for this unique learning experience. The group spent time getting to know more about Oakland County, each other and themselves and their leadership potential. For an insider’s look, here’s Leadership Oakland’s video of the retreat.

In future sessions, Sandy and the other participants will engage in experiential learning and hear from local leaders on topics including Economy & Government, Human Services & Non-Profits, Health & Environment, Diversity & Inclusion, the Justice System, Education, Arts & Culture, Shaping the Future, and last but not least, a class project that the 25th class hopes will have a significant and lasting impact on the community.

Our Workplace Wellness is Award-Worthy

cc_20141001bb.jpg

Did you know we hold meetings while walking and when we’re working at our desks, we might be standing instead of sitting? It’s all part of our commitment to keeping The Center team healthy. That commitment has led to a 3rd healthy workplace award in less than a year. This time, we’re being recognized in Corp! Magazine’s online publication as one of Michigan’s Best and Brightest in Wellness. For Partner and Financial Advisor Sandy Adams, keeping our constant focus on health is one thing that makes The Center a great place to work.

For me, staying healthy and active gives me the energy and positive attitude to best serve my team and our clients. The Center is committed to helping our team stay healthy by providing us with education on health and wellness, providing equipment like standing desks and balance balls for alternative seating, and by encouraging standing or walking meetings.”

The Best and Brightest in Wellness awards will be handed out at a gala on October 2nd. The selection was based on an assessment by the wellness systems firm Wellco. We won this award based on criteria like wellness policies, healthy work environment, senior leadership support of health initiatives, and motivation.

Earlier this year we won a Healthy Workplace Award from the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports. And last December The Center was recognized as one of Michigan’s Healthiest Employers by Priority Health, Crain’s Detroit Business and MiBiz. In 2007, we launched an initiative to shape up our office. Looks like we’re on the right track.

Center Makes Crain's List of Top Money Managers

For the second consecutive year, Center for Financial Planning has been recognized as one of the Detroit area’s largest money managers. The annual Top 25 recognition is a big deal to us because it means we are making our mark in southeast Michigan and beyond.

Center Partner Melissa Joy says the recognition puts CFP in great company.

We have never set a goal to be the largest firm around, but our size and community footprint here in Michigan helps us to deliver world-class financial planning service to an exceptional group of people – our clients. To us, success isn’t measured by dollars and cents, but by the lives we touch.”

Crain’s list is a compilation of money managers in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Washtenaw and Livingston counties. To see the complete list click here.

Criteria used to determine the Top 25 Managers is based on assets under management with discretion exclude master trusts, directed trusts, options, custodial accounts and advisory accounts over which no direct investment responsibility exists. Information was provided by the companies or from Form ADV. It is not a complete listing but the most comprehensive available.

Center Summer Picnic Becomes a Tradition

Tradition is an important part of The Center’s culture. That’s why we couldn’t be happier to see last year’s picnic turning into a tradition. For our 2nd Annual Center Picnic, The Center team gathered at Island Lake State Park in Brighton on July 19th. The day was filled with food, laughs, and competition. The weather wasn’t quite as cooperative as last year, but that didn’t stop anyone from enjoying the day.

The picnic began with some friendly games of cornhole and balloon animals for the kids. We fueled up on burgers, hot dogs, sausages, chips, cupcakes, and cookies, and then the games began.

Referred to by some as “The Boyce Show,” Dan was once again the Master of Ceremonies.  Even as the ominous clouds began to roll in, our MC reminded the team that, much like the financial markets, we can’t be deterred by an uncertain future!  Despite the periodic rain showers, Dan maintained order and fun with his trusty megaphone.

The competition was heated in the balloon toss, egg and spoon race, and volleyball matches where The Center team’s passion and determination shined through. We firmly believe the motto:

It’s not whether you win or lose, it’s how you play the game.

Everyone left the picnic feeling like a champion.  However, it should be noted that some team members claim they are already training for next year.

Summer Internship Offers Inside Look at The Center

The summer months provide the perfect opportunity for college students aiming for a career in the financial services industry to shadow some of our knowledgeable team members. We seek out eager learners who work independently and are able to multi-task. We found the perfect candidate in Nick Boguth. This summer he is working primarily with the Investment and Financial Planning Departments. While doing research projects, mutual fund performance reporting, and database updates, he is getting invaluable access to our culture and operation.

Nick Boguth: University of Michigan

A double major in economics and statistics at U of M, Nick Boguth was a natural fit for our team. Nick starts his senior year this fall. Next year he plans on finding a job in the financial services industry and pursuing either the CFA or CFP designation. When hunting for the right internship placement, Nick says he did his homework.

I researched The Center and it seemed like an established company with similar values to mine, and I knew that I would have a great experience over the 4 months of summer.”

As for his dream job, well, Nick says he’s still deciding whether he wants to focus more on the advising part of the industry or the investment side.

Celebrating our Team

Three of our team members can boast a combined tenure with The Center of nearly 40 years! We think it says something about our great culture and these three ladies are a very important part of it. Partner Melissa Joy, CFP® joined our team 15 years ago and Partner Sandy Adams, CFP® has been here for 18 years. Jaclyn Jackson, our Research Associate, became part of The Center family 6 years ago. We couldn’t provide the kind of service for our clients without the commitment of these three. Congratulations Melissa, Sandy and Jaclyn and here’s to many more Centerversaries!
