KACY WYMAN 9TH ANNUAL FUN RUN/WALK BENEFITTING CYSTINOSIS RESEARCH NETWORK

On Sunday May 3rd we will hold the 9th Annual Cystinosis Fun Run/Walk in honor of our daughter, Kacy Wyman.  In the past we have had over 350 walkers and runners support the event and Kacy.

Kacy will begin a new stage in her treatment as she is expected to have a kidney transplant in early June 2015.  She continues to be an inspiration to many each day. Her required medicine regime is challenging each day (37 pills a day, eye drops 8-10 times per day and 7 liters of water) – but she doesn’t let it stop her from living each day to the fullest.   

Your financial support is making a difference in Kacy’s life and all of the children enduring this rare disease called Cystinosis (Sis-ta-know-sis). Your support drives research and gives us hope that a cure will be found. We understand that there are many worthy causes and feel very fortunate that so many have supported Kacy’s cause in the past – and appreciate you considering attending or making a financial contribution for our event. Big League Hits & the Importance of a Short Memory

Nothing screams springtime more than baseball. For most Michigan players – baseball is practiced indoors from November thru March most years so they are itching to get outside this time of year. That was true for my son Jack and his teammates at Albion College.  The Britons made their annual pilgrimage south to play ball during spring break.  My wife Jen and I decided to go cheer the team on near Orlando, FL for four days. I know, it’s a tough job – but hey it’s all for the kids!

Fortunately the weather was quite nice – I have the sunburn to prove it as usual. Jack’s team finished 5-2 with some exciting games in both victory & defeat. Jack’s first hit came in a reserve game where he legged out a triple after hitting to the left center fence.  Later in the week he got a few starts with the varsity squad collecting his first “big league” hit up the middle. Needless to say, we were excited and proud of him.  Currently Jack is playing first base and pitching as one of the team’s closers.  I think he would agree that he played well in the field – and that he’d like to forget his first pitching outing.  Fortunately, after many years of playing baseball, he learned the importance of having a short memory and went back to the ballpark the following day to compete.

Lessons of the Game

As many of you may recall, I coached youth baseball for several years (see Jack’s 10-year-old team – he’s the first row directly in the middle).

It’s fair to say I was quite passionate about it. I found the game of baseball, at least at the youth level, to be so much more than a little white ball.  It’s a game that provides many valuable life lessons. Sometimes you succeed – sometimes you don’t.  How you handle and deal with failure is more important than how you deal with success. The little things count in baseball that the casual observer overlooks or underappreciates; move a runner, throw to the correct base, know when to take a pitch, ah I could talk about it for days!

The old MasterCard commercials sum up our experience:

Flight = $350

Condo  = $200/night

Rental car = $70/day

Seeing your kid get his first collegiate hit in person = priceless

Opening Day for the big guys will be here soon.  For me, I will be spending my time following Albion. Welcome Spring!

Boomerang Drain: Can an Adult Child Derail your own Financial Goals?

You’ve raised your children, launched them out into the world, and cut the purse strings, right? For many of us, the answer is no. Financially caring for those that left the nest but not the wallet is a sensitive subject, but a real one when it comes to planning for your own retirement. The National Center for Policy Analysis reports that more than half of parents of 18 to 39 year olds are providing some support:

59% of baby boomer parents financially support their adult children, often paying living expenses, medical bills and student loans.

For most of us, there is a relatively set amount of money/cash flow to work with.  If we spend more on financial support for adult children, this leaves less for other areas such as travel and/or saving. This is not making a judgment if such support is right or wrong. It is just math. 

Tactics for Setting Goals and Boundaries

If you find yourself wanting to provide financial support, consider setting both goals and boundaries.  Ask yourself these questions:

  1. What expenses are you willing to contribute?

  2. How long do you want to contribute? 

  3. What are the expectations of your child?

In the past, I have worked with clients that have decided to provide financial support to their “boomerang” child.  They were glad that they were in the financial position to do so and acknowledged that some of their own plans were being put on hold because of their choice.  The parents set a 2-year window for their child, a son in this case, and laid out their expectations. It looked something like this:

  • They decided they were willing to pay for their adult child’s rent and car for 3 months at 100%

  • The next three months they covered 50% of the rent

  •  After that, the child was fully responsible for the payment

 The plan worked out well for all of them and now mom and dad are back to enjoying the empty nest years.

More Retirement Goal Drains

Boomerang drain is just one of the pitfalls or obstacles to avoid if you want your empty nest years feel like being, “In college, only with money.” Many of us simply don’t make the time to plan what we want your empty nest years to be (here are my tips on that). Another obstacle can be debt, which doesn’t have to be a four-letter word.  Managing the use of credit is an important component to building and maintaining wealth and having flexible cash flow to accommodate travel or ramping up your savings for retirement. When it comes to reaching retirement goals, I’m a where there’s a will, there’s a way kind of person. Is the glass half full or half empty? I prefer it filled to the rim with a napkin underneath to catch any potential drips. We all face challenges in retirement planning. The important part is overcoming those challenges by filling that glass to overflowing … and I’ve seen many clients do it over the years. If you are an empty nester facing any of these potential drains on your goals, talk to your financial planner.

What to Consider Before You Buy a Second Home

Well it’s that time of year again.  No not the cold and flu season – well actually it’s that time too.  Rather, I am talking about the time of year where my wife and I go up north for a few days and after a fantastic 24 hours have the conversation.  You know, should we buy our own vacation home/condo rather than mooch off our friends (hey they are good friends)? It’s a question that many of my Empty and Soon-to-be-Empty Nester clients ask.

First Steps to a Second Home

Our friends, we will call them John & Michelle to protect their identity, decided a few years ago to purchase a condo in God’s Country (that’s northern Michigan….not way up North).   So far the purchase has worked out well and I think they did a few things right.  They actually bought the condo with another family as they knew neither of them would use the condo fully on their own.  They spelled out their “parenting” time or who had first right of refusal for each Holiday.  And last but not least, they formed a Limited Liability Company (LLC) to own the property in order to shield other personal assets from potential liability. All in all, the purchase has been wonderful for us…..er I mean them.

Consider the “Carrying” Costs

For a short period of time a second home or vacation home sounds like a wonderful idea to us (wine is involved in many instances).  However, after a few minutes we decide that it is not for us.  Although interest rates are low, making the cost more manageable, we have some other financial priorities at this time.  Also, many folks do not fully consider, or fully appreciate, the “carrying” costs of owning a second home.  The real or total cost of owning a second home is much more than principal & interest payments.  Additional costs can include:

  • Property taxes

  • Association dues

  • Utilities

  • Insurance

  • Repairs & maintenance (necessary year round, whether or not you’re there)

Additionally, simply furnishing and updating two homes is no cheap undertaking. For now, we are content renting for the couple of times that we make it up north. 

3 Factors in Buying a Second Home

That said, I wouldn’t be surprised if we decide to make a second home purchase in the future – for lifestyle purposes rather than investment.  And if we do, we’ll make the following a part of our decision-making process:

  • Use: Do we expect to use it more than just a couple of weeks? If so then buying may make sense.

  • Location: What area makes sense now and in the future? Are we willing to drive X hours?

  • Price: What price point will still allow us to fund retirement savings? What are the ongoing expenses?

Adding a second home can have wonderful lifestyle benefits.  Many a family has built cherished memories thanks to the family cottage.  Make sure you weigh the full cost of owning a second home with the desired lifestyle benefits.

Making the Most of Your Empty Nest Years – Part 2

The kids have gone to college or moved away and now you enter the Empty Nest Years. Will your empty nest years resemble “empty nest syndrome” (complete with a sense of loss, perhaps depression, alcoholism, identity crisis and marital conflicts)? Back in July 2014, I shared a conversation with a client in my first Empty Nest blog. They described their empty nest like this: “It’s Like being in college, only with money!” Working with clients whom have transitioned into the empty nest years successfully, the first common thread has been that they make time to plan.

Making time to Plan

It seems like such a simple statement, but it is often overlooked.  Like most successful folks, those empty nesters made a plan to live with intention. They examined their values, decided what was truly important in their lives, and then aligned their decisions with their intentions.

One of the most profound ways to examine values is through the work of George Kinder of the Kinder Institute.  My wife Jen and I have gone through the process with one of our firm’s partners and it has been quite helpful in leading an intentional life.  George Kinder takes a unique approach to financial planning – what he terms “life planning”.  My personal take is that at the core life planning is “financial planning done right”.  Many of life’s most important goals have a financial component. Like life planning, our comprehensive financial planning is designed to move beyond the numbers (not just dollars and cents) and address your goals and values.

3 Steps to Setting Financial Intentions

How can you discover or clarify the deeper values in your life and live with [more] intention? Here are two exercises that you might find helpful.  If they resonate, we’d love to help you.

To help clients discover the deeper values in their lives, Kinder poses three questions:

  1. Imagine you are financially secure, that you have enough money to take care of your needs, now and in the future. How would you live your life? Would you change anything? Let yourself go. Don’t hold back on your dreams. Describe a life that is complete and richly yours.

  2. Now imagine that you visit your doctor, who tells you that you have only 5-10 years to live. You won’t ever feel sick, but you will have no notice of the moment of your death. What will you do in the time you have remaining? Will you change your life and how will you do it? (Note that this question does not assume unlimited funds.)

  3. Finally, imagine that your doctor shocks you with the news that you only have 24 hours to live. Notice what feelings arise as you confront your very real mortality. Ask yourself: What did you miss? Who did you not get to be? What did you not get to do?

When you understand what you want to do with your life, you can make financial choices that reflect your values as you plan for your empty nest years.

Taking Stock of Life

Here is a second exercise to consider that can help lead to clarity and intention. Take a piece of paper and at the top write “Goals for My Life – Taking stock”. Below that, across the top write “One month, 3 months, one year, 3 years, 5 years, 10 years, 20 years, and lifetime”.  Next, down the left hand side write “Work, Family, Relationships, Spirit, Community, Creativity, Health, Finances” and any other category for your personal circumstances.

Consider each time frame and category and the things you would like to accomplish.  Perhaps in 5 years under Family you would like to take the entire family on a holiday trip.  Or perhaps in 3 months under Work you want to reduce your hours.  Write it down – don’t underestimate the power of the pen or pencil.  Dr. Gail Matthews, a psychology professor at Dominican University in California, found that you are 42 percent more likely to achieve your goals just by writing them down. My experience suggests it’s even higher – write them down!

The empty nest years are an important transition.  I hope yours are “It’s Like being in college, only with money!”

Why I Disliked my Diversified Portfolio in 2014

Let’s face it; we live in a headline kind of world these days. One of the fastest growing media outlets, Twitter, only allows 140 characters. They might as well rename it “Headwitter”! I was reminded of the power of headlines recently as I was reviewing my personal financial planning; reflecting on the progress I have made toward goals such as retirement, estate, tax, life insurance, and investments. And, after reviewing my personal 401k plan, and witnessing single digit growth, my immediate reaction was probably similar to many other investors that utilize a prudent asset allocation strategy (40% fixed income and 60% equities). I’d be less than candid if I didn’t share that my immediate thought was, “I dislike my diversified portfolio”.

The headlines suggest it should have been a better year. However, knowing that the substance is below the headlines, and 140 characters can’t convey the whole story, my diversified portfolio performed just as it is supposed to in 2014.

The Financial Headlines

The financial news -- whether it be radio, print, or social media -- almost entirely focuses on three major market indexes; the DJIA, the S&P 500 and the NASDAQ. All three are barometers for Large Stocks in the United States; they are meaningless for additional assets found in a diversified portfolio such as international stocks, small and medium size stocks, and bonds of all varieties. It is true that large US stock indexes were at or near all-time highs throughout 2014.  It is also true that many other major asset classes gained no ground or were even negative for the year including: high yield junk bonds, small cap stocks, commodities, metals, energy, international stocks and emerging markets. Moreover, even within US large stocks there was vast disparity as large cap value stocks lagged large growth stocks by almost 50%!

How to Dig Deeper into Strategy & Outlook

Our firm utilizes a variety of resources in developing our economic outlook and asset allocation strategies including research from well-respected firms such as Russell Investments and Raymond James. Review the “Russell Balanced Portfolio Returns” graphic that provides a useful visual on how a variety of asset classes have performed since 2005. (Click below image to enlarge.)

This chart shows the historical performance of different asset classes, as well as an asset allocation portfolio (35% fixed & 65% diversified equities). The asset allocation portfolio incorporates the various asset classes shown in the chart and highlights how balance and diversification can help reduce volatility (risk) and enhance returns.Risk adjusted returns are always a worthy goal and, as I have written in the past, risk is always present and matters.

Do you recall 2008-2009 or how about the lost decade of 2000-2010? If you “see” a pattern in asset class returns over time, please look again. There is no determinable pattern. Asset class returns are cyclical and it’s difficult to predict which asset class will outperform in any given year. A portfolio with a mix of asset classes, on average, should smooth the ride by lowering risk over a full market cycle. I’d suggest if there is any pattern to see, it would be that a diversified portfolio should provide aless volatile investment experience than any single asset class. A diversified portfolio is unlikely to be worse than the lowest performing asset class in any given year, and on the flip side it is unlikely to be better than the best performing asset class. Just what you would expect!

Staying Focused & Disciplined

The current environment reminds me of the strong US stock market experienced in the late 1990’s.  During that time, unfortunately some folks were willing to abandon discipline because of increased greed or conversely, increased fear. Currently I sense an interesting phenomenon, an increase in fear. Not of markets going down, but rather a fear of being left behind in such a strong US stock market. As important as it is not to panic out of an asset class after a large decline, it remains equally important not to panic into an asset class. I believe maintaining discipline in both environments is critical to investment success.

Like the late 1990’s, many folks have taken note of the S&P 500’s outperformance of many other asset classes over the last five years and wonder why they should invest in anything else. The question is understandable. If you find yourself asking the same question, you might consider the following:

  • The S&P 500 Index has had tremendous performance over the last five years, but it’s difficult to predict which asset class will outperform from year to year. A portfolio with a mix of asset classes, on average, should smooth the ride by lowering risk over a full market cycle.

  • Fundamentally, prices of U.S. companies are hovering around the long-term average. International equities, particularly the emerging markets, are still well below their normal estimates and may have con­siderable room for improvement.

  • U.S. large caps, as defined by the S&P 500 Index, have outperformed international equities (MSCI EAFE) four of the last five years. The last time the S&P outperformed for a significant time 1996-2001, the MSCI outperformed in the subsequent six years.

Managing Risk

Benjamin Graham, known as the “father of value investing”, dedicated much of his book, The Intelligent Investor, to risk.  In one of his many timeless quotes he says, “The essence of investment management is the management of risks, not the management of returns.”  This statement can be counterintuitive to many investors.  As I have shared before, risk does not have to be an alarm; rather a healthy dose of reality in all investment environments. That’s how we meet life’s financial goals. Diversification is about avoiding the big setbacks along the way – it doesn’t protect against losses – it is used to manage risk.

So, if you are feeling like I did initially about your portfolio, hopefully after review and reflection you might also change your perspective like I did from “I dislike my diversified portfolio” to “My diversified portfolio - just what I would expect”. IMO - In My Opinion: A take on mortgages, Roths, pensions & more

My wife, Jen, and I have been speed watching The Good Wife thanks to Netflix. In The Good Wife, one of the judges (apparently the legal system makes for good TV) constantly requires the lawyers in her courtroom to end their arguments with, “In my opinion.”  The attorneys look bewildered each time as if to say…well of course it’s only my opinion, just like every other statement I make, and everyone knows that except for you, apparently.  A recent consultation reminded me of the “in my opinion” skit (“IMO” for short). 

Professionals Offer Differing Opinions

In our field of professional financial planning (not to be confused with the majority of firms and advisors in the financial SALES industry) there are many rules of thumb, but very few technical standards of care that you might find in the medical or legal field.

As a Certified Financial Planner® practitioner, there are some guiding principles and general statements that CFP® practitioners are expected to display in their professional activities, but they are hardly a technical standard of care. The CFP Board states that “Allowance can be made for innocent error and legitimate differences of opinion, but integrity cannot co-exist with deceit or subordination of one’s principles.” Those legitimate differences of opinion are what I’m talking about.

Reasonable minds can and will differ just as in everyday life it is not uncommon to hear reasonable folks say, “Let’s agree to disagree.”  Professional differences of opinion do not render the other professional a crook or even wrong if they are acting from a place of integrity – IMO.  Moreover, it is perfectly appropriate to express a difference of opinion with another financial professional when done in a professional and non disparaging manner – IMO.

Back to my recent consultation – as I listened to the recommendations of another professional, I realized I had several different opinions on what was best for this particular situation and needed to share:

ROTH Conversions: As my colleagues here at The Center can attest, I hold a pretty strong opinion that most people have gotten the Roth Conversion issue “incorrect”.  I believe that many folks have accelerated income taxes at a higher rate than they will pay in the future.  Most workers have a higher income, which usually translates into a higher marginal tax bracket, during their working years than they do in retirement.  But wait; there is no Required Minimum Distribution from a ROTH. True, but this is still only relevant as to what bracket the money comes out.  Don’t get me wrong, this is not an absolutist opinion, there are plenty of correct situations where ROTH’s makes sense (IMO) – look for an upcoming post about converting after tax 401k contributions to a ROTH as an example. There are other limited situations where a ROTH makes sense, IMO.  For example, if you are a high net worth person and reasonably expect that you will always be in the highest marginal bracket, then converting and paying at 35% vs the new 39.6% marginal rate seems to make sense. 

Mortgage vs no mortgage:  A firm attempting to become a national financial planning firm recently counseled a young retiree looking to relocate to another state to, “Get the biggest mortgage possible.” Call us old school – but we think that most retirees are best served entering their retirement years debt free. And this client has substantial taxable funds to complete the purchase.  Our suggestion was to actually RENT initially.  Once they are comfortable and they have found a location that suits them for at least the next 5 years, we think they should consider a cash purchase. Rates are low, which does make obtaining a mortgage more attractive, however in retirement (at age 50) the rate is going to be much higher than any suggested distribution rate (1-3%?).

Pension Lump Sum: Our recommendation is for the client to take a monthly pension at age 55 in the form of a 100% survivor benefit even though her husband is older. The other advisor suggested that even assuming a low return, investing the lump sum will produce more money.  The client suggests that age 94 mortality was very reasonable given her family history.  Under these assumptions, the “low return” needed from the investment portfolio turned out to be 6%; hardly a “low” return IMO. Assuming only a 1% annual difference in return (5%) the lump sum lasts only to age 86.  One of the advantages to taking the lump sum is flexibility or access to a lump sum if needed.  Fortunately, the client’s other assets are substantial. Other more confident professionals might find the hurdle rate low; not me.

401k Rollover:  We both recommended a 401k rollover to an IRA managed by our respective firms.  The client left the employ of a major corporation with what I would categorize as containing a competitive 401k, in terms of investment options and expenses.  My sense is that the client will be better served by rolling the account to either professional.  Successful investment management is more about behavior than selecting the best allocation or underlying securities to complete the allocation – IMO.

Asset Allocation: The other professional recommended a 70% equity and 30% fixed income allocation versus our 60/40 allocation.  My thinking is at this time of their life, less risk is a bit more important.  I do, however, appreciate that because they are so young (hedging against inflation), and their expected withdrawal rate is under 3%, that a higher equity allocation may be reasonable. The other adviser apparently pointed out that their allocation was “optimized” (directly on the efficient frontier) because their mid cap exposure was higher than our recommendation in addition to our international equity allocation being 12% vs their 10% recommendation.  Due to current valuations, we have reduced our allocation to mid and small cap equities from a neutral weighting of 10% down to 8.5% and our international (large developed) is at our target weighting of 12%.  The other professional suggests 14% and 10% respectively.  Only time will tell which portfolio was more successful.  I do feel pretty strongly that in the end our client’s behavior will be more determinative of their investment success versus the subtle differences in portfolio recommendation – IMO.

Annuities:  Do you remember when some advisors called anyone recommending an annuity a crook?  Fast forward a few years and some of the profession’s highly regarded practitioners recommend annuities in many situations.  I still believe that they are way oversold, but that doesn’t mean there are not appropriate situations - IMO.

A ROTH IRA Strategy for High Income Earners

Do you have a 401k Plan from your current employer?  Does it allow you to make after tax contributions (these are different than pretax contributions and Roth 401k contributions)?  If the answer to both is “yes”, a recent IRS notice may present a welcome opportunity.  IRS Notice 2014-54 has provided guidance (positive guidance) allowing the splitting of after tax 401k contributions to a ROTH IRA. Although I believe that ROTH IRAs are used in many less than ideal situations, this is one strategy that can make sense for higher income earners; tax diversification and getting money into a ROTH without a big upfront tax cost. 

After answering “yes” to the first two questions, the next question is, “Are you making maximum contributions on a pretax basis?”  That is, if you are under 50 years old, are you contributing $17,500 and if you are over 50 (the new 30) $23,000? If you are making the maximum contribution, then a second look at after tax contributions should be considered.  Whew – that’s three hoops to jump through – but the benefits might just be worth it.

Putting Notice 2014-54 to Work

For example, Teddy, age 50 has a 401k plan and contributes $23,000 (includes the catch up contribution) and his employer matches $5,000 for a total of $28,000.  Teddy’s plan also allows for after tax contributions and he may contribute $29,000 more up to an IRS limit of $57,000. 

The new IRS Notice makes it clear and simplifies the process allowing this after tax amount at retirement to be rolled into a ROTH IRA.

The bottom line:  It is more attractive to make after tax contributions to your 401k with the flexibility of converting the basis to a ROTH at retirement or separation of employment without the tax hit of an ordinary Roth conversion.

As usual, the nuances are plentiful and your specific circumstances will determine whether this strategy is best for you.  To that end, we are here to help evaluate the opportunity with you.

Want to be a Genius when it comes to Retirement?

My friend* and fellow professional Marc Freedman, CFP® recently published his first book Retiring for the Genius®. The two subtitles capture the essence of the book: “Your Blueprint for Planning a Comfortable Retirement” designed “For the Genius in All of Us™”. I had the honor of providing a peer review during editing and, according to the Author’s Acknowledgement, provided “invaluable and honest insights.” Writing a book is an admirable undertaking and it was truly an honor and pleasure playing a very small role.

Retiring for the Genius® is very comprehensive, covering almost 400 pages of text. Marc addresses an enormous amount of content including social security, income taxes, designing retirement income, estate planning; Marc covers it all. Fortunately there’s an array of summaries, examples and “inspiration” tips to keep the material interesting and practical.  Marc accomplished his goal of providing meaningful content that we all can understand and implement. Give it a read.

*In the spirit of full disclosure, I need to define “friend”.  Marc and I are Facebook friends, and according to my three kids, that means in 2014 we are almost like family.  More importantly, we both served the Board of Directors of the Financial Planning Association and its 25,000 members about a decade ago. Richard Marston on Investing for a Lifetime

 What does a financial planning geek do for fun? He visits the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania for a day of lectures! The first part of the day was spent hearing from Professor Richard C. Marston. Professor Marston is the James R.F. Guy Professor at Wharton, a graduate of Yale, MIT, and Oxford (on the east coast they would call him “wicked smart”). Moreover, he has taught asset allocation for over twenty years and in 2011 wrote the book Portfolio Design: A Modern Approach to Asset Allocation (Wiley, 2011). Needless to say, it was a thought-provoking and worthwhile day.

In two lectures -- the first taken from his new book, Investing for a Lifetime” Managing Wealth for the “New Normal” and the second titled “Investing with a Fifteen Year Perspective: Past and Future” – Marston shared what he believes to be some “best practices” in savings and investing. He talked about choosing an asset allocation focusing on stocks when you are still years from retirement. You then gradually shift towards a 50/50 portfolio while saving 15%-20% of income during the accumulation period. And once you reach retirement, he discussed spending 4% of accumulated wealth. My sense is that these are consistent messages that our clients have heard from us over the years. 

During one of the wicked smart professor’s lectures, he shared that as he gets older, he has a greater appreciation for the role that investor and advisor behavior plays in ultimate investment success.  For example, he believes in using active managers. He also believes that selecting the right investments is important (and he is paid by several family offices to do so), but behavior such as letting fear or greed control actions plays a critical role as well.

Professor Marston’s recent work also focuses on determining a savings goal for retirement. A common rule of thumb is that investors must save 8 times their income before they retire.  So, if you earn $100k, then you need $800k saved at retirement.  Professor Marston was intrigued by the simplicity of the general rule and decided to put it through his own analysis. In the end, his analysis suggested that 8 times income is probably too low for most people.  His own conclusions, obviously depending on the exact assumptions, ranged from 11.5 to 18.4 times income. In his opinion, your savings goals will vary widely depending on two main factors:

  • If you are single: Your savings must be higher because a couple will receive more in social security benefits at the same earnings (consider it a marriage premium).
  • If you earn much more than $100k: Your savings rate needs to be higher because social security plays a lessor role in your retirement income.

As a quick aside, I was pleased to hear Professor Marston include and emphasize the importance of social security in the retirement planning analysis.  Without it, the savings rates above would need to be increased significantly.  I invite you to read our many previous posts on social security and let us know if we can help answer any questions.

On the flight home from the lectures, I read Professor Marston’s newest book Investing for a Lifetime (Wiley, 2014). It’s about making saving and investing understandable to the investor.  Probably the most important statement, that occurs early and often, is SAVING IS MORE DIFFICULT THAN INVESTING. Meeting your life goals, such as retirement, is much more dependent on our savings than getting another 1% from investment portfolios.  As I have written in the past, saving is much more than dollars and cents; it takes discipline and perseverance.

For our long-time clients, the book would provide a good refresher on many of the concepts we have discussed and encouraged over the years.  If you have a family member or friend starting their career or looking to take more control of their finances, Professor Marston has the ability to make the complex simple and I think his books would be a wonderful gift.

The second part of my Wharton School visit was spent hearing from Professor Christopher Geczy, Ph.D., another wicked smart guy.  I will leave that review for another post.  If you like Alpha, Beta, Correlation coefficient, Standard Deviation, R Squared, Systematic risk, and Idiosyncratic risk…well you are in for a treat!
